Entrevista con Tete: Cuarta entrega/installment #4

Regra áurea do magistério: dizer o obvio e ainda repetir trés vezes.

T - ( risas) A veces falta sutileza.

Regra áurea do magistério: dizer o obvio e ainda repetir trés vezes.

Golden rule of teaching: to say the obvious and still repit it thrice.

T - Be that as it may tango cannot be learned in four days. And even knowing a million steps, if you do not have the music it doesn't work at all; if there is no cadence or what we call emotion or feeling, is like nothing at all. I dance because I dance. Today, at this time many people do it because it is fashionable.
But what about emotions? I think there are many people who want to learn to dance because they find something in its music.
There were many tango lyrics very beautiful to listen to, and there were also sad lyrics, where the man was always helpless, in the sense that without the woman he couldn't do anything at all.
Afterwards this changes a bit, and so do the orchestras and their musicians. Orchestras are getting bigger, more affirmative musically. In the 40's, there were many changes, in '46  as well and in the '50's the orchestras had progresed a lot , but then decayed, very few composers remained ; many of them traded music for coffe and milk, but the tango salon does not lose force, it continued to evolve and began to be danced in the neighborhood clubs where you could still dance fantasía (mixing styles) there was more freedom...
In the salones ganchos or sacadas  were not allowed, if you made them you'll never get back in there again. And that condition becomes strict in the tango salon.
S - Which were the rules?

T - Tango dance was flat, you could do a lot of things other than showing the sole of your shoe, it was like drawing on the floor. There were men sketching on the floor the same way a woman might go about her needlework or a soccer player catches the ball. There is an emotion. Mostly we talk about form, how to dance or even dress. Polished shoes and elegant attires. You couldn't go to dance unless you dressed properly and even during the Summer you had to wear a jacket.  It was like a beautiful ritual, even those who had no means had to commit themselves to do their utmost because they wanted to go, even I had sometimes to ask clothes from my brother who happened to be the same size.

S - Why did your brother had better clothes than you?

T - Because he worked and I was lazy. I liked to go out at night. We went to several dances in a day. Those who worked were changing jackets several times a day.

S - At what time were the dances?

T - In the afternoon were the confiterías, from 4pm onwards. In the '50s, Sans Souci and Piccadilly, they were already there when I was still a kid, I could not come in but I spied them. I was about 13 or 14 when Montecarlo and Sans Souci were already there. Usually were three shifts, Matinee, Evening and LateNight.

S-We have said that a feature of Salon's style is the way to embrace?

T - Yes. At that time people would touch and embrace each other differently. Nowadays it seems to be harder to embrace. Friendly men greeting each other would hug or shake hands; kissing was something done more by the Italians or women; girls kissing each other. And when you played the "groom" to get the kiss you had to be engaged to marry. There were many prejudices, women had to have an "exemplary" life and now is not unusual for them to take the iniciative. Times change. Love between man and woman is a necessity. It ceases to be love when it becomes only sexual necessity, but sensual as it is also still exists, in the affectionate kisses and hugs, the love of life, flowers, animals, friends.
In tango, in the early days of tango, women would be taken by the waist, torsos were separated and the faces looked to the same side. In the Tango Salon the embrace is total, not separate torsos and faces together right side with right side.
S - Can you do"traspié" ?

T - You can do anything, it's just not necessary for the bodies to be separated to do the figure.

S - One can say that what characterizes the Salon style is the position of the bodies?

T - Yes, in tango salon the bodies always stay close to each other; and the important thing also is that tango is unique to each couple, pure improvisation. You can learn some things from the teachers and masters, but then you have to make your own moves. Man always creates his own steps and style. And women too.

S - Although sometimes praises are just for her wardrobe.

T - (laughs) Sometimes they lack subtlety.

The following note is a copy of an interview I did withTete in 2003.
Since this is a long interview I'll rather be sparing with this installment, mainly because there are several issues to be addressed that deserve to be read paying attention to detail to better understand what is this Tango that we love

Tango Salón
Interview with Tete, Summertime 2003

T - From the 40s  onwards  there is a need; the dancing floors in the tea room (Confiterías) were very small and the number of people dancing was quite enough. Then came and got installed the habit  of dancing  embraced, very close together, cheek to cheek , right side to right side.
That's  the way it  begins. And afterwards it isn't just a need. An you  understand that  this tango being born is more special than the tango that was danced before, called canyengue, orillero o fantasía.
In the clubs they danced separated; sometimes a little closer but it wasn't cheek to cheek tango.

S - Do you think tango in the clubs was danced further appart because of the family atmosphere, with mothers or older siblings?

T - There was a modesty about dancing together, it was unusual for women to enter to watch the dancing at the time; the parents had other expectations and was a different society. There was  a demureness in the relationship between women and men.
But there were places where they danced. I don't remember much, because I  was still a boy, 4 or 6 years old when I began to see the way they danced in clubs because I could not enter the Salones .

S - So when you started going to Salones it was already the 50s?

T - When I started going to the Salones I was 18 years old;   you could not go to places before that because the bouncers would ask for an ID, It was very difficult to prove you were older unless you had one... Otherwise you could use one from a relative o somebody who looked like you.

S -  You had to con the man at the door ...

T - Yes ... Some would wear a mustache or carry a fake ID but usually got spotted because of their young faces. It was not easy to go through that barrier. But I was always  there standing at the entrance listening to the music and got in just a few days before turning 18. I remember it was a Wednesday 3 days before my birthday which was on Saturday.
The year was '54. I was keen to enter the Monte Carlo, but the years passed and I couldn't  and finally go into the Picadilly that was next to the Teatro San Martín.

S - What was the spatial distribution?

T - The Picadilly was a basement , the tables were around the dancing floor .There were many, many tables, and lots of people standing. But the women were on one side and the men on the other, now is different ....
Presently is more like Pavadita ... There was another one near the Rex  movie house. I do not remember the name. There was men and women  separated into two groups ; although there were coffee shops where they  mixed and by just turning your head you were dancing.
The Salones were larger spaces, this style called Salón began in the coffee shops, very "glued" together kind of dancing.

S - So, the difference between the style of the Club and Confitería is basically that in the club  they were dancing further appart  and in confiterías , glued together you sayed

T - Of course, then that style passes on to the salones and also reaches the neighborhood clubs.

S - So, when you were a kid and you were not old enough to enter the confitería,  you went to the local club ...

T - Yes, I started in the club when I was 14 ..

S - Which was the club in your neighborhood?

T -  "Unidos de Pompeya" (United of Pompeii). I also practiced with the neighborhood kids the things they taught me, the girls did not go to the club, classes or practice did no exist; we danced and learned among men. Unless there was a party or birthday when the girls danced, danced with men. That is already known.

S - Where were the men for their practice, where would they meet?

T - Usually in the neighbourhood at some corner of a street in the evening, or also in the club where  the older people was doing their things ; we were kids, we were practicing , learning from older " boys"  who knew a little more or even much more
Including many of the best dancers I have ever known. I could name Tin- still alive- , and others like Caligari, Marquez, the Guengue, Virulazo. Many of them went to clubs for exhibitions or competitions.

S - Please tell us  a little bit about  competitions

T -At the competitions there were  some fierce individuals who sometimes disagree with the decisions taken by the jury. And often there were problems because the winner came from the neighborhood .
The jury matched the style of competition. When dancing fantasy, the jury was savvy in that style ... and so on, the jury had to be competent. The winners were chosen by applause or vote ..
Most of the time was by vote, and even some bought votes to make a friend win . And when it was by applause, it was dangerous because there were hooligans and it ended up in a brawl.

S.- Let's  go back to the beginning of the Salón style

T - I cannot say exactly who was the first to dance this style we now call Salón, I know they began to dance it at the confiterías; it was conditioned because the space and the musical style defined it.
It's in the years '39 / '40 when the orchestra began playing Salón but later on is the boom in the confiterías
I can not say when exactly because in '46 I was 10 but I remember there was confiterías and salones
At the confiterías they danced Salon,  close embrace, flat and elegant;  these are the elements that define this style of dance. "Flat" means that the shoesole can't be shown. The embrace is another important feature.
The communication involves close body contact, face to face. Embraced and both feet firmly on the ground, that is tango.
