macho cadenero viejo Regin

I

Volver a qué, Regin?

Me duele no saber aquella última vez

* traslation

The milonga rolls and devours what it used to be, in the 90's and in the 2000 too.
Alfredo¨Tape¨ Rubin is the author of this composition that evokes a dark Regin today veiled behind the mirrored walls of The Kiss ( El Beso), upstairs in Riobamba 416.
The milonga does not tell its past, it contains it as a line in a hand.

You can find the track  in  the album called ¨Reinanoche¨.

Regin

I met you in the Buenos Aires of the 90's blind party
when fatigue and misery began to wander the streets
collapsed today
and sometimes I think if you had not been a mirage for my madness
for my heart thirsting for a dancing fever
that always found opened your dirt of tango
your milonguero shine in heat
male draft horse, old Regin
1
The night already hit his harlequin jump
Escaping from the light a gray looking dancer
And in the morning pirouette
Fog of ghosts pushing to get back
Back to what, Regin?

I should have loved you right, I should have taken better
I should have enjoyed you too much to hate this pain
Rolls the milonga and devours what it used to be
You turned and so what, Regin?

How much dance you gave, taura* mother of dancing?
Always  beyond the possible, beyond ...
When one by one the others were croaking
little mornings of Regin, and who'll mention them?
Who, for when they are no more old timers,
will guard the fame of your cave's splendor
And your crazy glass among colored lightbulbs,
standing up to death, Regin?

We will have to imagine a new berretín*
Shoring up the sadness that things must come to an end
Queen milonga de mis amores*
You went your way into the city's night
You feel my goodbye, Regin

It hurts not knowing that last time
The mixed up tango at the waist I hugged
Entangled hearts have turned without future
Now what, Regin?

*taura : brave, spirited
*berrretin: fancy, infatuation
*milonga de mis amores: my beloved milonga, classical piece by Pedro Laurenz.

Un amor hecho cadencia/ A love being cadence

Many people have asked about my experience withTango, my opinion on this or that issue.
Since we have this excelent means of communication I'll take the plunge just writing here things that arise besides starting a dialogue among this noisy information circling around.

During my last stay in Manhattan, Adam and Cigdem, organizers of  You Should Be Dancing asked me to give a lecture on the history of this music that brings us together,  which I interpreted as the origin and evolution of tango, almost exclusively from the instrumental point of view, it  doesn't contemplate poetry or dance styles for the moment.

The word tango seems to come from the Ibibio language, originated  in Niger and Congo "tamgú, which means 'drum' also designated  the circle where the slaves usually met while in captivity.

In its 1899 edition, the Dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy defined the tango as an 'african dance popular among the people in America', as a second meaning, 'the music of this dance'.

The 1925 edition states " high society dance imported from America at the beginning of this century. This shows that the tango didn't just belong  to the lower classes and was already being considered as a dancing alternative by the higher classes. It also added the meaning 'music that belongs to this dance".
This social acceptance is firmly tied to the evolution of music, musicians with backgrounds in other musical genres will provide better quality of composition and interpretation. This is an important fact since the music is an art that requires interpreters to reach the public, is not immediate data such as the visual arts and literature.

The tango appeared in the Río de la Plata in the second half of the nineteenth century in the socio-cultural context of large waves of immigrants received by Montevideo, Rosario, Buenos Aires, Campana and Zárate; all these cities have historical records of proto-tango, an essentially rejected and banned music by the upper classes and the Catholic Church, which is the reason why it developed in the suburbs, ports, brothels, taverns and prisons, all of them places where the inmigrants, the local population, the natives and the African slaves  came together.

This is the point where musical forms merge freely: candombe, payada, milonga, habanera, polka, waltz, coming from all backgrounds: African, Gaucho, Hispanic -Settlers, Indian, Italian, Cuban, German.

It is generally considered that it took 40 years to take hold as a genre in the last decade of the nineteenth century. The tango-song was being played since 1850 but was not "tango" because the vocal style was linked to the Spanish tango and habanera.

What certainly confers an identity to tango is the bandoneon, a highly complex instrument capable of producing harmonious melody and percussion. Some authors state that they were already bandoneons in the region during the war against Paraguay (1865-1870) but is around 1900 when it reaches the Rio de la Plata in the luggage of German inmigrants.

So far, the tango had been played with guitar, violin, flute and drums. There are almost no scores at this stage probably because musicians could not write and their interpretation was based on existing melodies.

The first tango with a registered author in Buenos Aires is "El entrerriano" by Rosendo Mendizabal released in 1896 and printed in 1898.

In the first decade of the twentieth century the tango was included in the theater scene repertoire especially by Lola Membrives. Other featured singers were Linda Thelma and Angel Villoldo considered the father of tango with El choclo in 1903. Other successes were Hotel Victoria, El porteñito, and  La morocha;  we are already in 1908.

This segment is called Guardia Vieja. It has excellent composers such as Agustín Bardi (Tinta Verde, El Rodeo) Eduardo Arolas (The Cachila, Derecho viejo). The performance is poor  from the harmonic point of view, but in the following periods the same scores were enriched with arrangements incorporating more complex instrumentation.

Up to this point the tango was performed by a duet, trio or quartet.

1924 is the beginning of the Guardia Nueva with Julio De Caro's sextet.
This movement also includes Osvaldo Fresedo, Carlos Di Sarli, Carlos Cobian and Enrique Delfino. The sextet as an orchestral formation outlines what will be the Typical Orchestra with ten instruments, which marks a milestone in 1935 when Juan D'Arienzo recorded Hotel Victoria.
This arrangement of old sheet music sets the stage for what will be the Golden Age of the '40s which brings us to the tango as it came to our lives.

So far, the first installment.
